When Walt was about a year old, his mother Susan Lloyd moved to Amsterdam with work after she and her boyfriend, Michael Dawson, experienced difficulties in their relationship, taking Walt with her while Michael remained in New York1.
Approximately two months before Walt’s second birthday, Michael argued with Susan on a payphone when he found out that she was seeing Brian, her boss in Amsterdam. Furious, he walked across the street and was run down by a car. Two weeks before Walt’s birthday, Susan returned to visit him and told him that she was covering his medical expenses. She also told him that she was marrying Bryan and wanted him to adopt Walt2.
When Walt was ten, he, Susan and Brian moved to Sydney. On one occasion, Susan started to experience flu-like symptoms, distracting Brian when Walt was trying to show him a bird in a nature book. When Walt got frustrated, a bird slammed into the window and died, causing Brian to look at him, slightly disturbed.
Susan died a few weeks later, and Brian went to New York to tell Michael that he wanted him to take Walt; he had never wanted children but had adopted him to please her. Now that she was gone he didn’t feel he could care for him any more and, additionally, he thought Walt was ‘different’3.
Michael flew to Sydney to collect Walt, who didn’t recognize him. To protect him, Michael told him that Brian wanted to keep him but he had no choice in the matter since Michael wanted him. He told Walt he could bring Vincent, even though he was Brian’s dog4.
Walt was comforted by his father Michael following the crash of Oceanic 815, and on hearing the Smoke Monster in the jungle that night, expressed hope that it was actually Vincent.5
The next day whilst looking for Vincent in the jungle he found a pair of handcuffs which he gave to his father. Later, Michael tried to bond with him by first asking him if he could read Spanish as he was reading a Spanish comic (he couldn’t) and then by suggesting that they could get a new dog. Walt stomped off in disgust and later met Locke, who taught him about backgammon and offered to tell him a secret6, which was that he thought a miracle had happened.7 Michael wasn’t very comfortable with Walt talking to Locke but Walt shot his objections down pretty quickly.8
The next day, Michael returned Vincent to him – although Walt doesn’t realize that it was actually Locke that found him.9
Michael left Walt in Sun’s care while he went hunting boar the next day – something that Walt seemed to think was pretty cool, especially when he returned wounded.10
A few days later when Michael was attacked by Jin, Walt wondered what he had done to provoke it – highlighting the fact that they didn’t know each other very well. That night, they took baby steps to rectify that as they watched the signal fire burn11.
The following day, Walt was impressed when Michael led the group trying to rescue Jack after he was trapped in a cave-in. Walt later asked if they could stay in the caves12.
A few days later, Walt felt ignored by his father while he was playing golf, and instead found Locke, who he asked to teach him how to throw knives13.
When Michael took a search party out looking for Charlie and Claire, Walt stayed with Hurley. He beat the older man at backgammon, much to Hurley’s annoyance, and won $20,000 from him14.
Days later, Locke was teaching Walt to use a knife when Michael found out and warned him to stay away from his son15.
The next day he started gathering raft supplies with his father, but wandered off after Locke. Michael again confronted Locke, this time telling him he’d kill him if he went near Walt again. When Walt left with Vincent, the dog snapped his leash and Walt pursued him, ending up being trapped by a polar bear. Michael and Locke teamed up to track him, and worked together to save him from it. Fences mended, that night Michael showed Walt the box of cards and letters he’d written him that Susan had never shown him, proving that he’d always loved him16.
Walt continued to enjoy life on the island, playing backgammon with Hurley17, playing with Vincent18 and hanging out with his father who told him about New York19. When Michael’s raft was set on fire, Walt tried to help put it out but a distraught Michael pulled him away. The next day when the furore over Jin being falsely accused had died down, Locke found Walt and asked him why he had burned the raft. Walt confessed that he was sick of moving around and wanted to stay on the island – he liked it there. Locke told him he did too and promised not to tell anyone20.
