Pre-Island

Jin and Sun were in love, but he was a poor match and the only thing he could offer her was a white flower. To prove himself to her father, Mr Paik, Jin joined his company and agreed to work for two years before they married, although Sun had her doubts about the wisdom of this².

After they were married, Jin worked long hours and began to alienate Sun, at one point returning home late and covered in someone else’s blood. When she demanded to know what he did for her father, Jin replied that he did whatever he told him to do – for them³.

Sun planned to leave Jin after this incident and had a fake passport and money ready. She was to leave him at Sydney Airport at 11:15 and get in a waiting car. However, when the moment came she had doubts as she still loved Jin – and then he showed her a white flower he had bought her to wear and it swayed her decision to stay with him⁴.

On the Island

Sun stayed close to Jin on the beach on the first night following the crash of Oceanic 815 as he told her she must, although she didn’t seem to happy about his overbearing attitude. The next day, when a storm hit, he sat with her under a makeshift shelter, shooing another survivor away.⁵

As Jin collected sea urchin, Sun was approached by Michael who was looking for his son, but she was unable to help as she didn’t speak English. Jin shouted at her to fasten the top button of her cardigan. As he walked away to distribute the prepare sea urchin, she rebelled quietly by unfastening it again.⁶

Later that day, Michael stumbled on Sun while she was washing, much to the awkward surprise of them both.⁷

When Michael went on a boar hunt a few days later, it was Sun that he left watching over Walt.⁸

A few days later, Jin saw Michael wearing Sun’s father’s watch and attacked him. The fight was split up by Sawyer and Sayid, who cuffed Jin to wreckage until he could find out what happened. Jin refused to allow Sun to explain the situation but she took it on herself to explain it to Michael, revealing to him that she could speak English, something Jin didn’t know. After Michael freed Jin and returned the watch, the couple relocated to the caves with Jack and some of the other survivors⁹.

The following day, Sun was part of a group who tried to rescue Jack after he was trapped in a cave-in¹⁰.

At the caves, Sun used eucalyptus leaves fetched by Michael to form a paste to ease Shannon’s asthma – although Jin seemed confused as to why she was dealing with him¹¹.

Sun soon started a garden, and Kate helped her gather seeds to plant in it. During their work together, Kate realized that Sun could speak English although she promised not to tell anyone¹².

After Claire returned to the group, Jin was knocked out by Ethan while talking to Charlie. When Sun tended his injury, he told her that he didn’t know why he was attacked but he knew it was caused by something the other survivors had done¹³.

Sun stepped into slap Michael when he and Jin almost came to blows again when Sun fell as Jin tried to cover her up so others wouldn’t see her in her bikini. She later tried to apologize to Michael, telling him it was for his own protection as he didn’t know what Jin was capable of. Later, when Michael’s raft was burned many immediately thought that Jin was responsible, but Sun didn’t believe it – until she saw he had burned his hands. Disgusted, Jin left to slept in the jungle¹⁴.

The next day Jin was ‘captured’ by Sawyer and dragged back to the beach where Michael punched him to the ground again and again, accusing him of the arson. Sun eventually screamed at him to stop in English – much to Jin’s surprise. Locke also came to his defense by pointing out it was more likely that others like Ethan had burned the raft¹⁵.

Jin moved from the caves and left Sun alone, unable to forgive her and unable to go back to how things were at the start despite her tears¹⁶.
