Rousseau was a member of a scientific team who, three days out from Tahiti in 1988, lost navigation and were hit by a storm. The scientific team took refuge on the island.
On the Island
Rousseau’s accounts of her early days are hazy, but she seems to have killed her team after they became infected by what she calls ‘the carriers’, although she claims to have never seen anyone else on the island – although she has heard whispers in the jungle.
At some point early in her stay, she recorded a distress signal in French which has been playing on a loop since – although she notes that the place she recorded it is now controlled by others.
She had a child, Alex, who is no longer with her.
She has many traps around her dug-out, concealed home, and one of these snared Sayid while he followed a cable from the sea. She tortured and interrogated him, believing him to be one of the others and demanding to know where Alex was. However, she empathized with his loss of Nadia and allowed him to fix a music box given to her by her lover, Robert. When Sayid escaped, she refused his offer to join him and the others, instead warning him to watch the people he was with and to be careful.
