Mars was tipped off by Australian Ray Mullen that fugitive Kate Austen was on his sheep farm. He caught up with her while she was been driven to the local train station by Mullen, and she flipped the vehicle. She could have gotten away from Mars but instead chose to save Mullen as his pick-up was on fire.2
Mars was escorting Kate back to the US in his custody on Oceanic 815, but was knocked out by a falling case when turbulence hit the flight. As he was unconscious, Kate made sure that he had an airmask over his face when the plane went down.3
Mars was further injured in the crash, and was impaled by a piece of the plane. Sawyer found him and took his gun and badge while he was unconscious.4
After the crash, Jack made him as comfortable as he could, and Kate told him that Mars was sitting next to her on the plane.5
The next day, with no sign of rescue, Jack was forced to remove the shrapnel from Mars. To Jack’s horror, he woke up and demanded to know where ‘she’ was.6 The ‘she’ was of course, Kate, but Mars soon blacked out again.
Later the next day he warned Jack not to trust Kate no matter what she said. He spoke to Kate alone and from their rapport it was obvious that although the pair were at odds there was a mutual respect. Knowing he was dying, he asked Kate to kill him and put him out of his misery. Unable to, she asked Sawyer to do it instead. Sawyer’s shot missed Mars’ heart, however, leaving it up to Jack to kill him.7
Edward Mars died on September 26, 2004.8
