Ethan was a survivor of Oceanic 815. Almost two weeks after the crash, he joined Locke hunting at night, having had experience with trapping rabbits and later the next day, he joined a lot of the survivors watching the island’s golf tournament on Hurley’s homemade golf course1.
A few days later, Hurley took a register of the survivors, and cross-checked it against the plane’s manifest – Ethan’s name wasn’t on it. Before Hurley could tell Jack, Ethan confronted Claire and Charlie in the jungle, and seem scarily fixated on Claire2.
He kidnapped them both, later leaving Charlie hanged from a tree after beating Jack and telling him to stop following him – although Charlie was revived by Jack3.
Claire escaped from Ethan almost two weeks later; Ethan knocked Jin out and told Charlie that he wanted Claire back or he’d kill one person a day until he got her, leaving Charlie for last. That night, he appeared to make good on his threat, killing Scott. The next day, he was caught by Jack, Sayid, Sawyer, Kate and Locke who used as Claire as bait, again ending up in a fistfight with Jack but the outcome this time different. When he was on his knees, he was killed by Charlie shooting him in the chest six times, having picked up the gun Jack dropped4.
