Claire found out she was pregnant and was convinced by her boyfriend Thomas that they should keep the baby. A few weeks later, she visited psychic Richard Malkin, who – after a moment – refused to give her a reading, sending her away confused1.
A few months later Thomas left Claire as he clearly wasn’t ready to commit to being a father. Distressed, Claire returned to Malkin who warned her that it was very important that she raise the baby. Claire responded by saying she was going to give the baby up for adoption if she and Thomas didn’t get back together2.
For the next four months Malkin continued to call Claire to try and talk her into keeping the baby although he was unsuccessful. Finally on the verge of signing adoption papers, Claire realized that she couldn’t go through with it, walking out of her lawyer’s office. She returned to Malkin and he told her that she needed to go to Los Angeles – he had found a couple willing to adopt who he described as ‘good people’. Confused, Claire refused saying that she couldn’t understand why he now wanted to give the baby up but he persisted, finally convincing her to board Oceanic 815 the next day3.
Claire was 8 months pregnant when Oceanic 815 crashed on the Island. Following the crash she believed she was having contractions and was helped by Jack and Hurley. The contractions later stopped.4
The next day Claire confided in Shannon that she hadn’t felt the baby move since then – although later in the day when she ate some sea urchin prepared by Jin, the baby reacted strongly – and she decided she thought the baby was a boy.5
On the third day, Claire made friends with Charlie while looking through the baggage on the beach.6
A few days later, when the group collected firewood to burn the fuselage and the bodies inside, Claire took it on herself to organize a memorial service for the dead after Jack refused to do so, reading their names from their personal effects as the fire burned behind her.7
The following day, Claire collapsed from dehydration and was cared for by Charlie while Kate and Sayid tried to locate the camp’s missing water8.
On the tenth day on the island, Claire was convinced by Charlie to move up to the caves with him so she was closer to Jack and fresh water, and their friendship was solidified by his gift of imaginary peanut butter9.
Claire began to have vivid nightmares on the island, even becoming convinced she was being attacked and injected while she slept. Charlie proved to be a strong support for her during the ordeal but she couldn’t bring herself to get close to him due to her betrayal by Thomas. As the nightmares persisted Jack thought they were stress related and suggested she take some sedatives to calm her10.
She left the caves in anger to stay at the beach and suffered a false labor. Charlie managed to calm her down and they talked about Malkin, realizing that he knew that Oceanic 815 was going to crash and had apparently wanted Claire and her baby to be on the island. Charlie convinced her to return to the caves, but on the way back they ran into Ethan Rom – who turned out not to be a passenger on the plane11.
Claire and Charlie were abducted by Ethan – who may have had help. Charlie was later left for dead, but Claire had vanished12.
Claire stumbled out of the jungle almost two weeks later, confused and dirty, and was found by Locke and Boone13. She fainted and was taken back to the caves, where she appeared to have amnesia, and Charlie looked after her14.
When Ethan demanded she be returned to him, everyone kept it from her until Scott was killed by him. She then went along with Locke’s plan to use her as bait to catch Ethan. Charlie was excluded from the group but followed anyway and shot Ethan in cold blood with the gun Jack had dropped. Claire later thanked him and told him she was beginning to remember some things – like imaginary peanut butter15.
Charlie started to keep Claire at a distance emotionally, after killing Ethan but came to realize that he wasn’t alone after Sayid spoke with him and the pair started spending more time together, frequently going for walks along the beach16.
